The fact that EP elections tend to still be regarded as second order elections, where many voters either abstain or cast a protest vote against their national government (Hix and Marsh, 2011), stems from voters’ overall lack of trust in the EP’s capacity to effectively represent their interests. In the Eurobarometer poll conducted immediately after the May 2014 election, a majority of 54 per cent of voters expressed the view that the EP ignores the concerns of the public, which is a marked decline from the post-2009 election survey, where only 41 per cent expressed this view (European Parliament, 2014b: 58).
